THEIR STORIES

"Alondra is a responsible young women who centers her days aroud school, helping at home, and craftsmanship. To the later, she devouts her afternoons while sitting for her younger brother. He's a curious boy and this has led him to wanting to learn embroidery from Alondra.
"She is known to have a very active role in the community because she finds great joy in meeting with her workgroup to find the best way to push forward their products to the next level while maintaining their good quality and keeping them 100% Mexican.
"She dedicates herself to sewing, embroidery, and backstrap weaving. She learned from a very young age thanks to her mother, who let her watch as she moved her feet on the sewing machine while she worked, and her cousins, who taught her all the details about weaving. Now she is an expert in what she does and aspires to continue perfecting it to generate even more beautiful pieces.
"Her favorite spots to craft are open spaces where she can sorround herself with the sounds of nature. Her dream is to have a steady stream of work, so she can purchase a plot of land to live with her family.
"I worked in organic fields in the United States, I lasted 2 ½ years. Now I make crafts with my wife. She is also an artisan, she studied a bit of textile tailoring. Together we make textile crafts, embroidery, chicote loom. She is very talented, she can make a wedding dress from scratch. We need great customers to keep doing crafts. The problem is always to find clients. I really like to cook. I am very good, I cook grilled chicken, roast beef and birria. I also know how to make pastries, donuts, or muffins. I learned on my own by watching how others did it. I want to finish building my house and fix it.
"I am the only one who knows how to weave on a pedal loom in my family. I learned because I couldn't find a job and a friend invited me to work with him. From the first day, I fell in love with this art. I like that you have to be in motion to knit, and you never get bored. When I am on top of the loom, my mind relaxes, and I even feel that I come home happier. I also really like that this job allows me to have the afternoons free to be with my family, which I enjoy. My family is the most valuable thing I have in this life. My wife and my daughters like to go downtown, stroll through the streets, buy ice cream, and listen to music in the square. My wife sees me so happy in this job that she jokingly tells me she also wants to learn to knit. It would be nice to have a workshop together.
"She always finds solutions to problems and to try new things. In the future, she would like to have her own handicraft business as she has many ideas for new products to develop.
"Her quick and nimble hands can thread elaborate patterns with the swiftness of an ice figure skater. Her precision and speed make her one of the most renowned sample makers.

IN MEMORY OF IRENE

For the first time, we said goodbye to one of the artisans who has inspired us the most in the construction of this dream called Someone Somewhere. With Irene, we encountered challenges, learnings, frustrations, achievements and moments full of happiness. All this, to achieve a dream that, today we share with many more artisans than we could ever have imagined.
