THEIR STORIES

"I love knitting, embroidery, and cooking. When I'm not at the looms, I spend my time in the kitchen. All of that makes me feel excellent, and I hope my whole family feels it. I have taught my children to cook, embroider, and weave. Making crafts or cooking is much more than a job. It is a pleasure, a joy. It is being able to do something beautiful or rich for others. I am pleased when they savor what I cooked or say, "how beautiful," after I embroider or weave.
"They both have always strived to achieve excellence in their craft. Be it in the design, creativity, and execution of their products.
"There she spends long seasons alone with the company of her children, who are terrific students and athletes. The sister of fellow artisan Petra, she stays in doing her craftsmanship while her family helps her around the house during the long weeks where her husband travels for work in Mexico City.
"One that sees craftsmanship as a way to stay in touch with their cultural legacy as well as the means to help them persue higher education. As is the case with many of her young peers, she divides her time on different fronts. Jumping between helping around her house, crafting and working part time at a local business.
"Fidelia spoils her two children with an interesting signature dish: spaghetti with mayonnaise and pineapple. What's distinct about Fidelia is her loving personality and bubbly energy.
"Money was needed in my house, I did not have the opportunity to finish high school, so since I was young, I had to work as a bricklayer, and when I was 20, I went to work in Mexico City. But I never fit in. It was difficult to enjoy life there because everything goes very fast, and you don't even know your neighbors. Here in Pátzcuaro, people are very calm and friendly. I enjoy life more, and when my cousin invited me to work in the loom workshop, I accepted without hesitation. The pay is better, and you don't expose yourself or put yourself at risk like in construction. After work, I like to go out for a walk with my girlfriend in the city center, have a coffee, ice cream or a beer. I also like to visit my grandmother and eat with her. The food here in Pátzcuaro is delicious, by the way.
"She spoils them by preparing their favorite dishes everytime they head out. Her biggest dream is to see her children graduate one day from university.
"Her skills aren't limited to embroidery as she knows everything there is to making shirts, pants, and more. She's also a terrific saleswoman and her persuasion is almost irresistable.

IN MEMORY OF IRENE

For the first time, we said goodbye to one of the artisans who has inspired us the most in the construction of this dream called Someone Somewhere. With Irene, we encountered challenges, learnings, frustrations, achievements and moments full of happiness. All this, to achieve a dream that, today we share with many more artisans than we could ever have imagined.
